My Adventure
Dear producer, author, performer, composer, or curious friend,
We have all wondered where to start in order to give shape to the ideas swirling in our minds, what the process is, what tools to use...
Although modest, here is my experience regarding the creation of songs.
A tedious beginning
Navigating a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) as a beginner can be quite challenging, especially when the entire interface and its functions are unfamiliar. I started with the free version of FL Studio (Fruity Loops), and I had to experiment and make numerous attempts before achieving something satisfactory. It was incredibly time-consuming because I wasn't shaping my ideas within the software; rather, I was adapting my ideas to fit the software. Constraints related to mixing settings and default, poor-quality samples were evident. I was well aware that I couldn't create professional content right away (and I still haven't reached that point), but I wanted to push myself further from the start.
So, I took matters into my own hands, turning these constraints into strengths and "collaborating" with the software to create a demo of my very first song, "Fire and Ice."
To be honest, I didn't even know how to arrange the song itself, so I extracted each sound file one by one and edited them in an external software, Audacity. This song is crucial to me because it represents the challenge I've always set for myself, and it marked a significant milestone. The entire project, from creation and production to singing and my first performance in front of an audience, was new, exciting, and frightening at the same time. I ended up presenting a "manufactured" music piece without adhering to a rhythm, with off-key notes and a less-than-perfect posture during my performance.
Nevertheless, I am proud of it.
Following that, I continued practicing with other songs. I spent hours in front of my computer, gradually understanding and experimenting with new things, using my iPhone as a microphone and headphones to calibrate everything. It's important to understand that good equipment doesn't necessarily guarantee good results, and the ultimate outcome depends on the commitment put into it. I still use the same equipment from my early days—a reliable old computer with my iPhone as a microphone. The only thing that has changed is the experience gained along the way.
Then …
Once the software was mastered, the next step was to create something potentially "marketable" and suitable for radio broadcast. Another challenge was to craft a song that adhered to established conventions with smoother soundscapes and sharp mixing. Thus, "Closer" was born. I dedicated significant effort to produce a professional initial version with visuals complementing the music. The subsequent steps involved marketing and establishing communication channels. This required the creation of a Facebook page, Instagram account, and a website. I then researched the process of commercializing the song, and once the necessary steps were completed, it became available on all streaming and sales platforms.
It's crucial to approach this not out of self-interest but genuine passion. I take personal pride in concluding my projects by seeing them released on these platforms. This process adds a whole new dimension, involving the creation of a unique universe, visual identity, and message conveyance. One needs to wear multiple hats, managing the product, ensuring its image, and handling marketing. This entails
creating visuals, filming and editing video clips, and distributing them across various social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
Today, and tomorrow
In my case, my songs draw from personal experiences or situations I wish to share, as I believe that's where inspiration is strongest. The key is to maintain an engaging tone and continue conveying the desired messages through one's creations. It's essential to blend learned experiences and remain curious throughout the journey. I've experimented with various software, now using Garageband, Auxy, and LMMS as my three foundational pillars—all of which are free. Exploring as much as possible pushes the boundaries of the experience, and seizing partnership opportunities for
remixes, visuals, and video productions can open doors and expand the potential audience.
Analyzing the pros and cons is crucial, but above all, one must create as they wish.
Questions like "Why do I want to create music?" and "What content do I want to share?" should be pondered. Am I truly eager to share all of this?
In any case, don't force things, and refrain from diving in unless you feel certain, as thorough preparation is essential.
Find yourself in what you do; the rest will follow.
As time goes on, my musical journey evolves and enriches my experience. Music is my passion, and I invite you to explore it through my latest song titled "Crew."
